My computer has Microsoft Office installed. In almost every folder there is a file, zero bytes long, called mscreate.dir. Can these files be safely deleted?
These zero-length hidden files are created by the Microsoft Setup program. They show that the folder was created by Setup. If you uninstall a component, or the entire application, Setup uses the presence of these files to determine if it is safe to remove an empty folder. Therefore, if you remove these files and later remove some Microsoft Office components, the folders they were stored in will not be deleted. The files occupy no space other than a few bytes in the folder's directory, so there is nothing to gain by deleting them.
